One of the great changes in entertainment over the last few years is the amount of TV show DVDs that are available. It used to be that just a few television DVDs would be released, but now it seems that every show is released and is available at a fantastic price. There are of course many different reasons why television shows on DVD are so popular today. First of all, it's a great way to catch up on a show that you haven't watched before, or a season of your favorite show that you missed. It's also great to bring home your favorite TV series on DVD so that you can enjoy all of the episodes at your convenience, whenever you want. You won't have to deal with commercials and you won't have to wait a week in between episodes.Plus, for the money you spend on a TV series on DVD, you get much more viewing time and total entertainment than most DVDs. You can find a season or two of your favorite show for between $20 and $40 in most cases, which is the cost of just a few movie DVDs for sale.So what are the most popular TV show ... [more..]

The old adage "Show your story rather than tell it!" is as true as ever. It is one technique that will always improve your writing. I admit that there is some great writing that makes a precedent for "tell," but as a rule "show" is more effective. Consider this.1. Your pen is your movie camera. In a film, a director ( that's you!) doesn't have an actor go on screen to tell the audience that someone is angry. Instead, he shows the character in a scene where anger is in action. In writing, this means you do not say, "Naomi was angry." You show the action (create a movie picture) that makes it clear: picking up a dish from the drying rack, Naomi throws it across the room; it crashes against the door Henry has just walked through. You may choose to include words (dialog) ("And don't you ever say that to me again!") that underscore the action. But the words should not replace the action.Your writing itself must show as much feeling as there was in life. You don't need to tell the reader that the character was angry or scared if you depict an action that successfully shows that ... [more..]

Every time I saw a movie by Speilberg or Ridley Scott or the older classics of David Lean or William Wyler I asked myself why we did not have a comparable movie maker to show us the great big story. We have had pretenders like SL Bhansali stealing ideas and having delusions of grandeur and also Farah Khan cashing upon the greatness of the ordinary. At least FK did not boast of being original. Am I happy or am I ecstatic at learning that a new star director has evolved in Bollywood. Spielberg knows the child in every man and always brings out the deepest emotions in the most moving ways. Aamir Khan has finally done it for me and beautifully so.The movie bursts forth with a magical collage of colors and the best of animation seen in Hindi cinema. You would love to see the titles. Of course it's not for the first time you would be seeing the struggle of a dyslexic child, a caring and a supportive outsider and the eventual triumph. But the dream of every movie maker of carrying the audience with every rise and fall of emotions is effectively realized here. You want to ... [more..]

I am a big fan of Kate Beckinsale and also Shawn Doyle, who plays the brother in the great show Big Love. This movie, though dropping off a little toward the second half, was an overall good film and would be a great selection at your Saturday night movie fest at the dorm or something to do when your friends get together. What it lacked in originality, it made up for in a well produced, well written, fast paced, 2 hours that I personally liked.Kate, as a U.S. Marshall posted in Antarctica, has to hunt down a killer who is on the loose. It is billed as the first murder in the frozen south, and the bodies start lining up as they discover the killer has found a treasure 20' under the ice that is worth murdering for. At first I thought this movie was a supernatural thriller, but let me quell that premise right off the get go. There are no ghosts lurking in the snow bank. It's just the nature of greed and dissatisfaction at work in the human soul. With the twists and turns of a typical suspense murder-who-done-it, Whiteout does a great job of keeping you on ... [more..]

I am examining the 1998 Jim Carrey film entitled "The Truman Show." This movie is not only filled with metaphors, it is a metaphor itself. I will discuss what the metaphors are in the film, their meaning, and how they tell the story. The purpose of this film is to inspire the audience by relating the life of a certain individual to their own lives with the use of metaphors. Truman is the main character and he is the star of a realty television show. The only problem is that he doesn't know his life is the subject of a television show. He lives in a gigantic studio that encases the population and the land of a small island city called Seahaven. 24 hours a day his life is broadcast live to the rest of the world. In order to keep the show running the crew constantly must find ways to stop him from figuring out his life is a T.V. show and they constantly must stop him from leaving Seahaven. The plot of the movie takes place when Truman decides that nothing is going to stop him from achieving his dreams and becoming a champion and he takes the audience ... [more..]
