Obesity is epidemic in this country for both children and adults. The invention of television, video games, and convenient appliances help to influence us to be sedentary. Obesity can create such problems as Diabetes, Heart Disease, Lung problems and circulation problems. Obesity also can sap your strength. So the cycle goes you are obese, you tire easily so you rest, a lot. You get up and move and you become tired and you rest again. Climbing stairs is nothing less then difficult, going a few steps can make you breathless. Joint problems also can be caused or aggravated by obesity. They say no pain, gain. I say if there is pain rest, you will gain nothing if you injure yourself. This is why it is wise to get a complete physical and the approval of your physician before beginning any exercise or nutrition program.Caring for yourself physically by seeing a doctor regularly, getting the proper rest, and eating right will prolong your life and in the long run you will feel better. Exercise is imperative to help you become fit however if your goal is also weight loss, you need to be burning more calories than what you take in. ... [more..]

At last, the Federal Communications Commission has reacted to the social damage of sex and violence by out- of-control cable and satellite television networks. My dander was aroused by a sleazy cable program that I stumbled onto while surfing the boob tube. What I watched for five minutes was disgusting and alarming.A baggy pants street gang - including two girls with bulging halters and peek-a-boo skirts - chased a young man. They cornered him and beat him to the pavement. Then, while the boys pinned him down, the girls straddled the victim, hoisted their skirts, dropped their crotch covers and urinated into the victim's face. Close up and in living color.I cringe in describing the scene, but cable producers, advertisers and - presumably -- cable viewers either enjoy sexual deviation and depravity, or have no moral compass. We seem to be up to our chins in a sea of filth, murmuring, "Don't make waves!" -- while Howard Stearn, king of cable filth, cruises about in his speedboat. On his tow cable, is the Internet email system open free to purveyors of pornography, cut-rate drugs, stock tips and Rolex watches. The wonderful Google information search engine also is sinking into the quagmire by featuring bloggers ... [more..]

In order to obtain affordable health insurance in Virginia, you must become a smart, conscientious consumer. Take these tips into consideration before you commit yourself to any health insurance program in Virginia.Avoid scams. Insurance fraud can go both ways; not all health insurance companies or agents have your best interest in mind. Many health insurance companies or agents are interested only in obtaining money from you. These companies are usually fly-by-night companies. To avoid these scams, contact the Virginia Bureau of Insurance and ask if the health insurance company in question is licensed to do business in Virginia. If not, move on. If so, you will be protected against fraud should the company scam you.Be aware of what you are purchasing. If the company or agent tells you it's health insurance, it's health insurance. If the company or agent tells you it's a health care savings or discount plan, it's not insurance. The two are not the same, so if you are looking for affordable health insurance in Virginia, you do not want to purchase a discount plan. Discount plans may help you save money, but they do not provide the same coverage as insurance plans.Pay the Virginia health insurance ... [more..]

Sure we know that the take out pizza, the chips loaded with salsa, the rich, creamy drink might not be as good as it looks on television (especially on those big screens), yet still the ad plants the seed - the desire for eating in front of the TV.According to Yale University researchers, watching those food ads on TV brings on more snacking in both children and adults. All that snacking is what adds extra calories to our already-overloaded diets, upping the risks of gaining weight. To begin, the researchers worked with children aged 7 to 11 who watched a cartoon that was interrupted by food commercials - these kids ate 45% more than children who'd watched the very same cartoon but with non-food commercials at the breaks.Marketers everywhere would be thrilled, this is exactly the reaction they want from those TV ads.But before you think adults fare any better, the team conducted an experiment with adults who saw TV ads for unhealthy foods and found that they ate much more than subjects who hadn't seen the same ads, instead watching commercials about good nutrition or healthy food. What's worse, the effects in the adults stuck around well after the program was ... [more..]

A common question that many parents ask is what is ADHD? The magazines, chat rooms and television abound with programs about this condition which is said to affect up to 1 in 25 of us. Many of the symptoms of ADHD are found even in 'normal' children, and it is very difficult at times to draw the boundary between normal and abnormal in the case of ADHD.In essence, ADHD and ADD are two related conditions 'attention deficit disorder' with and without hyperactivity. Although the precise mechanisms are not yet fully known, it is thought that an imbalance of chemical transmitters in the brain leads to the characteristic complex of symptoms referred to as ADD/ADHD. There are many ways in which ADHD might present, but the commonest presentation is in children, where they find it impossible to concentrate or sit still, constantly fidgeting, running around even though strictly instructed not to do so.The school is a major source of complaints leading to the diagnosis, as ADHD children often severely under perform. They do not finish their homework, score very poorly on tests, and show disruptive and anti-social behavior in the extreme cases. In milder cases, they cannot seem to focus ... [more..]
